This beautiful Elizabethan manor house has delighted visitors for centuries. Visiting in the 19th Century, Charlotte Brontë featured it as 'Fieldhead' - the home of the heroine in 'Shirley'. Built in 1583, the hall is now set out as it would have been in tht 1690s, when it was the home of the Batt family. A mixture of authentic and reproduction furnishings provide a real insight into late 17th Century life.
The Batts were members of the gentry and staunch Royalists. Visitors today can easily imagine themselves in post Civil War England when faced with the imposing Great Hall with its gallery, the elegant Painted Chamber and the beatifully panelled parlour: "-this parlour was lined with oak; fine, dark, glossy panels compassed the walls-.Very handsome, reader, these shining brown panels are, very mellow in colouring and tasteful in effect-."
Set in beautiful countryside where you can stroll around the delightful period garden or check out the inhabitants of the wildlife access garden. Pause for refreshments in the Oak Tree Café and treat yourself to a present from the well-stocked shop.
Visit often and watch the seasons change in the country park - 100 acres of the original estate for you to explore. As well as waymarked nature trails and numerous picnic areas, there's an equestrian arena and an adventure playground.
Then explore the 'Discover Oakwell' exhibition. This unique, interactive display, just off the courtyard, introduces children (and grown-ups, too) to the ecology of a country park.
Look out for the events programme. From period candlelight evenings to lively family activities, there's plenty to bring Oakwell to life!
